Swimming Canada has nominated four coaches to attend Own the Podium’s Coaching Enhancement Program.
The Coaching Enhancement Program (CEP) is a new development initiative supported by Own the Podium to bring coaches from Canada’s leading sports together to connect and develop skills that are at the core of Canada’s World Class Coaching Framework. Part of this initiative is to offer two different workshops per year for coaches who are working with athletes that are 0-8 years away from podium success. This includes NextGen and development pathway coaches.
Swimming Canada has nominated the following four coaches to attend the first workshop on Feb. 26-27, 2018 in Calgary, Alberta:
- Greg Kozell - Triton Swimming
- Dave Johnson - Cascade Swim Club
- Mike Meldrum - Killarney Swim Club
- Scott Wilson - Red Deer Catalina Swim Club
“We looked to nominate Alberta coaches who are currently working with NextGen 2024 targeted athletes in our club programs,” said Iain McDonald, Senior Manager of NextGen High Performance Pathway. “This is an excellent opportunity for them to be exposed to some advanced coaching competencies as they continue to develop the athletes in their programs.”
The first workshop will focus on emotional intelligence. The goal is for coaches to build self-awareness and understanding of their emotional intelligence both in training and competition and learn why it’s an important foundation of coaching.
Each year, the two workshops will be developed and offered three times each at varying locations, so coaches have the opportunity to attend the program.
“There will be a number of these CEP workshops coming up across the country and we will be working with coaches in order to try to expose as many of them as possible to these valuable experiences,” said McDonald.
The program will educate coaches with new ideas, practices, and skills based on foundational coaching and leadership to help them take their athletes to the next level.
“High Performance coach development is a key focus for Swimming Canada. Since 2014, we have worked with over 50 coaches through various professional development initiatives. We continually look to develop opportunities for coaches both through internal programs and by taking advantage of externally driven activities,” McDonald added.
