September 14, 2017…EDMONTON- When Swim Alberta Technical Coordinator Kevin Dennis took a look at what was missing in Swim Alberta’s offerings to pre-competitive swimming, a light bulb went off.
After zeroing in Swim Alberta’s new introduced mission statement, ‘Every swimmer has the opportunity to reach their full potential,’ Dennis realized reaching that full potential begins long before swimmers dive into competitive age group swimming.
“Many swimmers join competitive swimming because they love racing.” says Dennis. “By providing a grassroots racing opportunity, we hope to ignite the passion for racing in more young swimmers who will eventually be our swimming stars of the future.”

Each month through the swim season a different event will be offered as a virtual race such as a ‘25 kick challenge’. Coaches will then record times for each swimmer and submit the times to the Swim Alberta office.
Swimmers who participate in the program will receive a certificate and a different sticker for each race completed. At the conclusion of the program, any swimmer who completes all eight races will earn a gift from Swim Alberta.
Swim Alberta President Dean Schultz says the project is one of many the provincial section hopes to offer that aligns with their new strategic plan for 2017-2024 that was set earlier this year.
“Swim Alberta recognizes the importance of learn to swim programs as part of our competitive structure” says Schultz.
“The launch of this program shows our commitment to supporting athletes from the early stages of development all the way through to fit for life programs, while aligning with our strategic direction of creating growth and opportunities through inclusive membership.”
The pilot project will be introduced this fall, and will be open to clubs across the province to participate in with their pre-competitive registered swimmers.
