EDMONTON – The 2018 Canadian Swimming Trials get underway Wednesday as Canada’s top swimmers have gathered in Edmonton to compete for spots on the national team.
Swimming Canada will select and announce its pool teams for next month’s Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo and the Pan Pacific Para Swimming Championships in Cairns, Australia.
The fully integrated national championship meet runs through Sunday at the Kinsmen Sports Centre and will feature 404 athletes from 105 clubs from across Canada, with visiting competitors from France, Peru, Thailand, Singapore, Scotland and the U.S.
Rio 2016 medallists Kennedy Goss, Benoit Huot, Kylie Masse, Penny Oleksiak, Emily Overholt, Aurelie Rivard, Katarina Roxon, Tess Routliffe, Taylor Ruck and Nicolas-Guy Turbide are expected to be in action. Ruck is fresh off her record-tying eight-medal performance at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, where Masse won two gold medals.
The star-studded lineup will also include world championship medallists Javier Acevedo, Yuri Kisil, Sydney Pickrem, Rebecca Smith, Markus Thormeyer and Richard Funk – an Edmonton native.
Several other Gold Coast 2018 medallists will also be looking to get back on the national team, including Morgan Bird, Sarah Darcel, Kayla Sanchez, Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson, Kierra Smith, Abi Tripp, Philippe Vachon and Alexia Zevnik.
Tickets are available for purchase on-site. Preliminary sessions kick off at 10 a.m. each day, with final sessions beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 for heats, $10 for finales, or $55 for a full meet pass.
