Highlights from the Canadian Swimming Championships – Day 3

WINNIPEG – Cole Pratt of Calgary and Jade Hannah of Victoria kept their pace of one victory per day at the 2019 Canadian Swimming Championships on Saturday at the Pan Am Pool.

Pratt placed first in the men’s 200-m individual medley to add to his wins in the 200-m backstroke on Thursday and the 100-m back on Friday.

His time in the 200 IM was 2:03.32 as he edged William Marois of North Vancouver in second in 2:03.39. Robert Hill of Calgary was third in 2:03.43.

Other winners in men’s competition were Tim Zeng of North Vancouver in the 50-m backstroke in 25.60, Nathan Beaudin-Bolduc of Quebec City in the 400-m freestyle in 3:55.24 and Raphael Marcoux of Quebec City in the 100-m butterfly in 53.48. Marcoux also won the 50-m freestyle on Thursday. It was a first win for Zeng and Beaudin-Bolduc.

“I did my best, my legs were failing a bit at the end,” said Zeng. “I was nervous for the final because I was really wanted to get a best time but unfortunately I came up short.”

Hannah completed a golden sweep of the backstroke events winning the 50-m race in 28.50. Daphné Danyluk of Montreal was second in 28.92 and Regan Rathwell of Ottawa third in 29.34. On Thursday, Hannah was first in the 200 back and on Friday she won the 100 back.

Bailey Herbert of Langley, B.C., Hannah Genich of Toronto and Marit Anderson of Calgary all registered their first wins placing first in the 200 IM in 2:16.06, 100 fly 59.90 and 400 free 4:15.79.

“I was just super excited to get out there and race all those amazing people from across Canada,” said Herbert, 16. “I think that really pushed me. I was nervous beforehand but I just went as hard as I could and improve on my start for the prelims.”

In para-swimming Nicholas Bennett of Parksville, B.C., was a double winner placing first in the 200 IM and 100 fly. Quebec’s Tyson Jacob took the 50 back. For the women, Aly Van Wyck-Smart of Toronto was first in the 150 IM and 50 back while Camille Bérubé of Gatineau, Que., and Samantha Ryan of Saskatoon topped the 200 IM and 100 fly.

Université Laval and Natation Neptune won the men’s and women’s 4X100-m freestyle relays.

In the club standings, Neptune Natation leads with 833 points, Pointe-Claire Swim Club has moved into second at 628 and Edmonton Keyano is third at 550.

Competition ends Sunday.
