Red Deer Catalina Swimmer Climbs the Ranks to Join Victoria NextGen Program
June 7, 2018…EDMONTON- Red Deer Catalina Swim Club’s Kyla Leibel will be heading to Victoria, B.C. to join Swimming Canada’s NextGen Program in September of 2018. Leibel, a sprint freestyler, becomes the third swimmer from the Red Deer, Alberta based club to join a Swimming Canada high performance base program, following the likes of Rebecca Smith and Joshua Young.
Leibel will make the move from Red Deer to Victoria following the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Fiji August 23-16, where she will be joined by seven other Alberta Athletes and two coaches, one of which being her home club coach, Scott Wilson. “Although we are sad to see Kyla leave the province”, says Cheryl Humphrey, Executive Director of Swim Alberta, “we support her decision to move to Victoria. Our Alberta club programs continue to produce athletes who are performing well and above expected performances based on our registration numbers, or as we like to say – ‘punching above our weight’. This is evident in the number of athletes who have made the Junior National teams this year.”
Leibel’s development in Alberta under Wilson has helped springboard her into the next level to the NextGen program, getting her closer to achieving a trip to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Red Deer native will also head to Buenos Aries, Argentina as one of eight swimmers representing Canada at the Youth Olympic Games October 6-18th.
Through the performance development strategy that Swim Alberta has contracted Dr. Stephen Norris to develop, Alberta swimmers will have a framework of programs and services that will continue to support strong individual performances in the future, ensuring an Alberta first philosophy.
